A Christmas in Burundi: Joy, Tears, and Igitoke
December 2023 marked a special turning point in my life--the long-awaited trip to Burundi to reunite with my beloved family for Christmas. The journey back to the heart of Africa was not just a travelogue of miles covered but a profound journey back to my roots and loved ones.
My trip was a whirlwind, beginning with my arrival at Bujumbura International Airport on the eve of Christmas. The air was thick with anticipation and the familiar smells of my homeland.
The reunion with my family was nothing short of magical. As I stepped into the familial warmth of Gitega, my oldest daughter awaited me, her patience rewarded with an embrace that bridged the gap of time and distance. Beside her, my wife stood--the cornerstone of my heart. Hugging her and simply being in her presence was the most beautiful thing after so long apart. Every moment spent with her filled the void of our time away from each other, reminding me of my deep longing and love for her. Tears of joy marked our reunion; a poignant reminder of the bonds that tie. My father-in-law, sister-in-law, and the cherished household staff, including the nannies and driver, all stayed up to share in this moment of return.
The Christmas Eve dinner was a heartfelt feast, prepared by our house chef. We savored a traditional meal of rice, sombe and fried igitoke, a type of green banana, a dish that evokes many fond memories and represents the culinary heritage of culture. The dinner table was a vibrant tableau of laughter, stories, and the rekindling of familial bonds.
One of the highlights of my visit was an evening at Lenox Restaurant and Bar, a renowned establishment in Gitega, Burundi. My wife and I were thrilled to catch up with friends who had become part of our extended family. As we enjoyed deliciously prepared steaks and gourmet burgers, complemented by a selection of fine wines, live music filled the air, adding a lively backdrop to our gathering. The whole place was vibrant and colorful, alive with the sounds of laughter and music. The night was a vivid reminder of the beauty of shared meals and the joy they bring.
This trip was a profound reminder of the essential things in life:
Family, love, and the shared meals that bring us together. As I reflect on those precious moments, I am reminded of the spirit of Christmas and the universal longing for connection and belonging.
